Nanoparticle vaccine offers better protection

Ragon Program Leader for Technology Development, Dr. Darrell Irvine discusses a new type of nanoparticle vaccine delivery system which is being researched in his lab.

 

The nanoparticle system protects the vaccine long enough to generate a strong immune response  in mucosal surfaces far from the vaccination site.

 

“This is a good example of a project where the same technology can be applied in cancer and in infectious disease. It’s a platform technology to deliver a vaccine of interest,” says Irvine,

 

Irvine, is professor of materials science and engineering and biological engineering at MIT and the leader of the team research the nanoparticle vaccine delivery system.  He is also exploring use of the particles to deliver cancer vaccines.
