Mauricio and Carlota Botton Research Fellowship

Overview

The Mauricio and Carlota Botton Research Fellowship provides funding for postdoctoral fellows from Spain to study at the Ragon Institute of Mass General Brigham, MIT, and Harvard for a period of at least one year under the guidance of a Ragon Institute faculty member. The awardees of the fellowship have the opportunity to study HIV, other infectious diseases of global import, vaccine development, cancer, or other areas of immunology that are investigated at the Ragon Institute, depending on the awardees’ qualifications and the lab with which they are matched.

About the Mauricio and Carlota Botton Foundation

Established in 2017, the Foundation supports scientific and medical research in Europe and the US, including the training of postdoctoral students from Spain at internationally recognized universities.

Current Fellow

Alberto D. López-Muñoz

Alberto D. López-Muñoz, PhD, is the current Mauricio and Carlota Botton Research Fellow at the Ragon Institute, specializing in virology, immunology, and vaccine discovery. He earned his PhD in Virology and Molecular Biosciences from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. López-Muñoz completed postdoctoral training at the NIH, where he received the 2023 Norman P. Salzman Memorial Award for excellence in virology research. At the DeKosky Lab, he currently conducts research on host-virus interactions, immunomodulation, and vaccine discovery, applying his extensive experience with pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and herpesviruses. He is also recognized as an accomplished science communicator.

Previous Fellows

Carmen Morcelle

Carmen Morcelle is a molecular biologist specializing in immunometabolism and a former Mauricio and Carlota Botton Research Fellow. She earned her Biology degree from the University of Alcalá in Spain and completed a Research Master’s in Biochemistry at University College London, UK. Morcelle then obtained her PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona, focusing on ribosomal biogenesis and cancer at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). Her postdoctoral journey includes research on macrophage metabolism at Fudan University, Shanghai, and further training at Harvard/Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2022, she joined the Ringel Lab at the Ragon Institute, investigating T cell differentiation and survival mechanisms.

Education and Outreach

The Office of Education and Outreach supports the Institute’s mission by offering programs such as RISE and PRISM to students from the Greater Boston community — setting a foundation for the next generation of researchers.
